RWE npower: Helping you help others

09/11 2015Posted by: npower Resourcing Team Subscribe to this blog

Catherine Wright, Resourcing Team Leader and part of the RWE npower Charity Committee, tells us about a recent volunteering experience she organised in Swindon.

My everyday role involves looking after half of the RWE npower resourcing team, but I also head up all volunteering activity in Swindon. Our Charity Committee is comprised of 50% charity work and 50% volunteering, and it’s this latter part that I’m really involved in.

Due to the geographic split at RWE npower it can be difficult for everyone to get together in person, but the Resourcing Team tries to do so every quarter. We decided to do a team day with a difference. Traditionally, these have always been heavily work-orientated, but with new team members and some management changes we decided to focus more on team building and bringing the group together. We decided the best way to do this was by splitting the day into two sections: work-focused planning and discussion, and helping out others in the community.

Legge House comes alive

We volunteered at Legge House in Swindon, a youth residential centre that provides low-cost holiday accommodation for young people. After visiting the charity-led organisation it became clear that they did excellent work for the community and their premises were in need of some TLC, particularly in the games room. So on October 22, we held our team day at Legge House, focusing on work-related activities in the morning before donning our overalls and getting to work. Legge House let us use their on-site conference facilities for free and provided us with all the equipment we’d need to tidy up their games room - we just had to bring the people-power.

The day was a really positive change for our team, giving them a chance to bond as a unit and enjoy some down-time away from the busy work environment. There was plenty of laughter and discussion throughout the day and our team enjoyed rolling their sleeves up and re-painting the games room at Legge House.

The structure of volunteering

Every single employee at RWE npower is given a half day per year in which to give back to the community through volunteering. Across the Charity Committee, we task each sector of the business with specific tasks. We try to be across what needs doing in the community and how we can be involved, along with encouraging people to take part in beneficial activities. Typically, people on committee dedicate more than half a day annually to charitable causes, and others in the organisation do like to get more involved, which is fantastic.

The future of volunteering at npower

We’re committed to expanding volunteering at RWE npower and see tremendous value in combining team building and volunteering days together. People get an enormous amount of benefit from volunteering and the Legge House day shows how well the format works when it’s split into both a work and volunteering focus.

It’s important for our workers to feel like they’re able to give back to their community, and we recognise that not everyone has the time or ability to do this outside of work hours. As such, we believe in offering this opportunity to our staff through their work here at npower, and we’re hoping to expand this further into the future.
