Could you be our next Graduate Engineer?

Graduates are faced with a plethora of options when it comes to searching for the perfect graduate scheme. Here at npower, we have a broad range of schemes to suit a variety of young professionals, and we’re always looking for talented people to join our team.

One of our newest schemes is through our RWE Generation UK business. The Graduate Information Engineer position is part of the Engineering Graduate Scheme, which is ideal for providing graduates with all the technical, practical and soft skills required to be successful engineers. But what kind of person makes a good Information Engineer graduate, and what does this team really do? Information Engineering’s Process Engineer Karen Grimwade spoke to us about what it takes to thrive in this part of the business.

What does the Information Engineering team do?

In essence, the team provides support to the power stations; the software they use in the control rooms and on-site, and manages IT projects on behalf of the business.

“We provide first line support for our applications and act as the interface to the business,” says Karen. “As a team we go to site, to our customers, gather their requirements, interpret them and work with suppliers to deliver a solution that meets those requirements and is fit for purpose.”

With various applications designed to enhance and support different parts of the business, which includes Operations, Commercial and Maintenance departments, the team is constantly looking for new ways to improve processes.

What are we looking for in a graduate?

“In a grad, we’re looking for somebody understands the basic principles of how a power station works as this will help with the applications they will be working on,” says Karen. “You must be very good at working closely in a small team but have the confidence to communicate with people across all levels within the business as well as our 3rd party customers.”

Anyone with knowledge of thermal performance or commercial applications, such as unit dispatching and safety systems will have an advantage in this role. Strong interpersonal skills are a must, as is the ability to sell your solution to stakeholders and really own your application.

There is a lot of flexibility offered in the team and the business in general, with site visits encouraged and working from home options available. Graduates will be able to see high-performing plants in action and get a solid overview of how power stations work, which will be invaluable for their future as engineers.

Being able to provide solutions that help people do their jobs more efficiently is a bonus, as is receiving feedback from customers that a solution you’ve championed has improved their day-to-day work life.

“We have a number of key applications that have been developed and are always looking to improve their functionality , so we’re constantly working to make things better for our customers and the business as a whole,” says Karen.
